Education for the deaf originated in Hartford, Connecticut in 1817.
The name of the institution was:
The Connecticut Asylum for the Education and Instruction of Deaf and Dumb Persons.
It was the first permanent institution for the disabled in the Western Hemisphere. In 1895, the school's name changed to the American School for the Deaf. Why do you think it changed?
